A review of challenges facing Zimbabwe’s environmental impact assessment (EIA) Process

Author: Pios Ncube (Ph.D.), Director

Abstract:

The study analyzed challenges facing environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes in Zimbabwe. The EIA landscape in Zimbabwe is supposed to be regulated by Environmental Management Act, enacted in 2002, however, there is confusion and diffusion legislatively, and hence the practice of EIA in the country is not well guided. The process of EIA cannot be overemphasized for the attainment of sustainable development; that takes into account socio-economic and environmental issues. The study revealed that, though Zimbabwe has made environmental legislative framework, such legislation remains drowned in related pieces of statutes that are being implemented by a host of Government Departments and Ministries. Naturally, such kind of pieces of legislation have caused duplications and overlap in environmental management processes.
The study was conducted through a desk review process and analysis of secondary data and literature.
